Ios is the capital of Akielos, located at the Akielon peninsula's southern tip. It is called the "white city" because of its white limestone cliffs and the white marble from which the palace is built.
The homes of the lower class are also painted white in imitation of the palace.
The palace is located at the highest point of Ios' cliffs and looks out over the Gulf of Atros, across which the island of Isthima is visible.[1][2]
Its location was chosen in part for its strategic advantage, as a place that would be difficult to invade with cliffs on three sides.[3]
